Jon is the eldest and most handsome of the three Showler brothers. He is also the most likely to retain a full head of hair into his adult life.
A top order batsman by trade he used to be prone to outrageous boasts like, “I bat like a right handed David Gower” or, “If I was to compare myself to anyone, it would probably be Chris Gayle”. Notwithstanding this, at his best Jon is a graceful batter whose high elbow and coruscating shots through the offside have dominated many bowling attacks.
In recent years he has developed his off-breaks to the extent that he can now be viewed at the least as a batsman who bowls, or at the most as a decent partnership breaker. This has led to the emphasis of his boasting changing. He will now frequently make flippant remarks such as, “I am the first team’s equivalent of Andrew Symonds”. Quite what TB Falcon makes of this is anyone’s guess. Equally Mr Falcon is no Andrew Symond’s either.
Up until a recent finger injury Jon was the first team’s specialist slip fielder. He has a decent pair of hands and catches far more than he drops there. Jon also has a good arm and his ground fielding is of a sufficiently high standard that Dixon feels the need to comment on it.
Jon is one if the game’s great thinkers and his love of technical discourse, analysis and village issues are second only to his mentor TB Falcon. He has recently been elected to the Club’s Committee of Public Safety, where it is anticipated that he will be a great asset.
